Information for Skyline College Faculty

When you submit your book orders on time to the bookstore, it allows us to buy the book(s) back from your students during book buy backs and allows us more time in procuring used books, which are less expensive, for your students.
Answers to Frequently Faculty Asked Book Questions:
Faculty Center Network back to top
The Faculty Center Network (FCN) is a one-stop resource of college textbooks for faculty members to use as a research tool and assist in making informed textbook adoption decisions.
Upon logging into FCN, faculty members will have access to a database containing over 175,000 titles which contains extensive bibliographic information. Besides the basic bibliographies of the titles in its database, the FCN also provides biographies of the authors, information of previous and/or new editions, links to the publisher's web site, desk copy request information, reviews of the textbooks, links to faculty and/or student supplements associated with the textbook, sample chapters (if available), cover images (if available), and much more.
In addition to bibliographic information, faculty members can review the titles; subject ranking and adoption information. The title's subject ranking indicates its level of demand within a specific subject area according to MBS Textbook Exchange, Inc., order history. The subject ranking shows the title's popularity within its designated subject area as assigned by MBS Textbook Exchange, Inc. The adoption data indicates where and how often the title is used in colleges/universities in the United States. Faculty can also view a list of colleges and universities which are using these titles.
The greatest tool within FCN is the FCNotebook. It allows faculty members who login with a user ID and password to keep a separate list of the titles they are interested in without having to search for them every time they visit the Faculty Center Network. Faculty can also use this list as a way of organizing the books which desk copies are needed. (Faculty members must contact the publisher directly in order to receive a desk copy of any title.)

Preprinted Adoption Forms
The Bookstore delivers preprinted textbook adoption forms to your division's dean and/or staff assistant approximately 2 to 3 months before the end of the current semester. Instructors should submit their completed, signed and approved textbook adoption forms by the DUE DATE for each semester to ensure that the books will be ready for the first day of classes and to ensure that your students may be able to sell back their books to the bookstore.
The preprinted textbook adoption forms contain course material information (books and supplies) and course enrollment. This information is based on the last time you were the instructor on record for that particular course. Click Here for a sample of what the preprinted textbook adoption forms look like. When filling out your textbook adoption, please read the instructions at the bottom of the form carefully. They may be revised since the last you filled out the form.
Blank Adoption Forms
If you have misplaced your preprinted textbook adoption form or wish to request additional course materials during the semester, blank adoption forms are available from your division's office or from the Bookstore. Additionally, blank adoption forms can also be downloaded from the Bookstore's web site, completed electronically with Adobe Acrobat, and emailed as an attachment or printed for your division dean's approval.

Copyright Compliance Resources:

Most publishers will send instructors a desk copy of the book that has been adopted or being considered for a course. Desk copies can be obtained by notifying the publisher directly or their local sales representative. A list of local representatives of many publishers is available from the bookstore and on our web site. Please contact the textbook department at the bookstore for publishers not listed.
To ensure that the desk copy arrives in a timely manner, faculty members should notify the publisher and/or their sales representatives of the need for a desk copy at the same time their book order for the upcoming term is submitted to the bookstore.
In the event that the desk copy has not arrived before the beginning of instruction, it is suggested that the professor purchase a copy from the bookstore. The amount paid will be refunded when the replacement copy with original cash register receipt is returned to the bookstore before the end of the semester.
Please Note:
The publisher should be instructed to send a new, complete and unmarked copy; otherwise the bookstore will not be able to refund your desk copy purchase. If you intend to open or write-in the copy purchased from the Bookstore, please notify the publisher that the desk copy needs to be the student edition of the title purchased. Publishers will not send desk copies to the Bookstore, nor will they accept requests from the Bookstore for desk copies. No refunds will be given for books not being used in the current semester. Please be sure to obtain your desk copy from the publisher before the semester ends.
Some publishers require that desk copy requests be made by mail or fax on college letterhead or NACS/AAP desk copy request form. Please click here to download the NACS/AAP desk copy request form.
