Profit Margin and Pricing Policy
The SMCCD Bookstores are a not for profit auxiliary service of the San Mateo County College District. Prices at the SMCCD Bookstores (Cañada College Bookstore, College of San Mateo Bookstore and Skyline College Bookstore) are established with a margin of profit sufficient to cover the costs of operating the SMCCD Bookstores. These costs include payroll, utilities, business supplies, costs associated with books and merchandise to be sold, and long range investments needed to make a clean, safe and efficient environment for SMCCD community.
The margin of profit on almost all textbooks is maintained at 25%. Some books may have a higher margin due to extra costs associated with them. Our margin of profit level compares favorably with that of other college bookstores in the Bay Area and nationally.
Along with our textbook buy back and used book programs, our nationally award winning textbook rental program helps save the students of the SMCCD money by allowing them to rent selected textbooks for a nominal fee.
Recent investments in the SMCCD Bookstores include a new cash register system at all 3 bookstores to help reduce wait times and more efficiently help students, a new bookstore at Skyline College and a remodeled bookstore at Canada College. Investments in the future include a new College of San Mateo Bookstore, more rental books, and much more.
